This is an antique, cast iron, fire starting pot with a brass lid. Used to start fires, the cauldron or pot held kerosene or lamp oil into which a pumice stone wand was dipped. The wand end was then lit and placed under the fireplace logs to start a fire. These pots were often used instead of kindling because the kerosene would burn at a high temperature long enough to get a fire going.
Pot measures approximately 5 3/4" across x 8" tall (not including the handle)
The width at the widest points at the wire handle loops is 7 1/2".
Weight is 8 lbs, 12 oz.
Condition: Overall good vintage condition. There are no cracks, breaks, or other structural damage. General wear, paint loss, and surface rust is present as shown in the photos.
Found in the basement of an estate in West Chester, Southeastern Pennsylvania, this kettle was definitely used over the years and has lots of character! It would be perfect for the blacksmith enthusiast, or it would complement your fireplace hearth, deck, or patio very nicely.
