Antique Hand Painted Punjabi Wedding Low Chair, also known as a Pidha Chair or Rajasthani chair from a local estate in Pennsylvania.
This fantastic old, Indian wedding chair is hand-painted and decorated with great patina. It is painted with red paint, as this symbolizes prosperity, fertility and passion and is considered good luck in the new marriage. Created in a geometric / symmetrical design and traditionally with a hand woven, jute seat. Often a pillow was used on top of this.
Measurements: The seat measures approx. 18" x 18", and is 7" from the floor. The back of the chair measures approx. 19" wide x 32-1/2" tall.
The chair is in pretty decent shape overall, considering it's age, with cosmetic wear as displayed in the photos. The rope for the seat could be replaced if needed, but original seat has been reinforced with nails. It appears that one leg has been repaired or reinforced at some point. Please see pictures for more detail. Everything is intact and stable, but some of the glue joints may need to be tightened if being used on a regular basis.
This beautiful antique chair would make a great accent piece in a yoga or meditation room.
