This is a fantastic late 1800's, Cast Iron Arch Top, Grate, that was once used for a basement window grate, or possibly a wood or coal stove. These old grates were used in the early days, in basement foundation walls, to allow air into the dirt cellars. Years later, homes began being built with windows incorporated in the foundation, instead of the grates. This is a great, original piece of architectural salvage, providing endless possibilities for your imagination.
The overall measurements of the grate are approx. 19-1/2" wide x 13-1/4" tall (at the tallest point in the center). Weight is approx. 15 LBS
Grate is in good solid condition, with normal surface rust, dirt, and patina. It appears that one vertical piece is broken off on the front lower section, but I am not sure if is actually broken, or if this be is missing by design. I have two of these grates, and they are both missing this piece at the exact same spot. There are no other breaks, cracks, or other structural damage.
