Beautiful, handmade, Welsh spinning chair, with removable back, made in the 1950's or 1960's.
These high back, wooden, stools were used to sit on while spinning wool at a spinning wheel. Their design, with no arms and a tall back, allowed women to move more freely while spinning.
Also called a "love chair" as they were often made by men for their sweethearts and often have a heart shape on them. This stool has a heart carved out of the top of the back.
Stool has four (4) square legs that are mortised into the seat.
Narrow, tall, wooden back is attached to the seat in the old "post and beam" barn construction style. The back fits through the seat and is held in place with a wooden peg underneath the seat. Back can easily be removed by removing the pin and lifting the back out of the seat. Please see pictures.
Stool shows excellent craftsmanship, and is in very good, solid condition with awesome patina. It is sized perfectly to use as a display piece or plant stand, and sturdy enough for every day use. Minor wear and imperfections as expected with vintage, handmade items.
It measures approximately 13" across at the seat and stands 20" tall. It is about 14" square at the very bottom of the legs.
Very unique and well made chair!
*Of note, this stool was purchased from a Chester County, Pennsylvania shop in the 1960's, from the artist's shop, however, is not marked.*
