This is an amazing antique Warren Knight Sterling 1038 surveyor transit, made in Philadelphia Pa., USA. It includes the original tripod and dove tailed wooden case. It still has the original paper label on the inside lid of the case, that provides the maker and model number. It also has a metal tag affixed to the outside of the lid with the makers name, and the transit is also marked on the top side of the mounting base,
The transit measures 9" x 6-1/4" x 11" tall. The case measures 8" x 10-1/2" x 13" tall. The tripod legs measure 55" long.
This old transit is in remarkably good condition for its age. The tripod legs are good and solid with no structural damage, and the adjustable wing nuts and bolts work properly. The dovetailed case is good and solid with working hinges. There is one (of 2) small hook latches missing which is used to keep the lid closed, and the belt has torn off a few inches from the end. The small piece of the belt is in the case and is included. I do not know much at all about transits, but this one appears to be complete and in working order, but i cannot be certain with my limited knowledge. The knobs and dials all move freely, and the sight glass is free of cracks and breaks. The transit and case will need a thorough cleaning to be in tip top shape to display.
This is a very nice old Surveyor set up that would be a great display it in the corner of your living room or Man Cave...
