Antique Pair (2) Wooden Indian Clubs, Boys "Right Posture" Suit Exercise Clubs, Made by N. Snellenburg & Co., Wilmington Delaware, Wood Pins

Very nice set of two (2), small, Antique Wooden Indian Clubs, Exercise / Juggling Pins. Hand turned wood clubs have rings around the handle as well as two (2) rings near the bottom. Both clubs are marked, and it is very difficult to read but say, "Boys Right-Posture Suit, N. Snellenburg & Co., Seventh and Market Street, Wilmington".

Each club weighs approximately 9 ounces, and measures about 13-1/2" long x about 2" across at the widest point

Established in 1869 in Philadelphia, PA, Snellenburg opened a store in Wilmington, DE in 1895, this later closed in 1932.

I believe these clubs were part of an aggressive, marketing campaign by the Snellenburg Clothing Company in 1919, for one of the biggest campaigns ever advertising boys clothing and their "Right-Posture" suits. Attractive illustrations showing boys wearing the company's suits engaging in their favorite sports and play activities, demonstrated the "correct" posture that could be obtained from wearing Snellengurg's "Right-Posture" suit. The company hired an ad agency who displayed the artistic illustrations in full page ads to show that the suits offered comfort and style as well as encouraging healthy posture and gait in young boys.

The company did sell other things including camping gear and toys, so they may have sold the Indian Clubs there, however, I was unable to find any other clubs marked with the company name or ads with images of the clubs.

CONDITION: Both pins are in pretty good shape overall, free of any structural cracks or other major damage. One has a scratch or gouge measuring about 2-3" long, as seen in above picture, but this does not affect the integrity of the club. Some cosmetic wear and patina is present, and perhaps some minor checking and dings as expected with age but these would make great antique decor pieces!
