Antique Shipwright's Caulking Mallet from the late 1800's or early 1900's. This tool was used by ship builders with a chisel type tool, to hammer cotton or oakum (loose, tarred hemp fiber), between the wooden slats of a boat, in an effort to make the ship water tight.
The head of the mallet has a metal / iron ring on each end that would help prevent the wood from splitting. Two slots on the top of the hammer's head, one on each side of the handle, helped absorb some of the shock to the shipwright's hand. Additionally, the slots made a whistling or singing sound when the hammer is swung, a sound that is said to be desired by the ship builders.
Measures approximately 11-3/4" across the top x 1-3/4" tall.
Handle measures about 11" long x 1-1/4" at thickest part, together 12-3/4" total length.
Mallet is in great condition with no structural damage. Scuffs and dings as expected with vintage, previously owned tools.
Great piece for any nautical collector to use or just display!
